Where we work from

We work from Eaglecrest Drive, up on Lower Sumas Mountain in the east of Abbotsford. From there we cover the whole city, and you can see the areas we cover on the map further down.

How much does an electrician cost in Abbotsford?

We charge $135 an hour for a Red Seal electrician plus a helper, so there are two people on site, not one. We also do plenty of jobs for a flat rate. Once we have looked at your work, we tell you which way your job will be priced.

We give you a free electrical quote, and you get the price in writing before any work starts. The consultation is free too. The quote is based on what we can see, so if we find something different once a wall is opened, we tell you before we do the extra work, not after.

Hourly labour

Tracking down a fault you cannot see takes testing time, so this is the one thing that is not free.

Who issues your electrical permit in Abbotsford?

The City does not issue electrical trade permits at all — the permit and the inspection that closes it both come from Technical Safety BC. Seven BC municipalities issue their own electrical installation permits instead, and Abbotsford is not one of them.

That changes nothing for you: we pull the permit before the work starts and you fill in no forms. We are there for the inspection too, so you are not left in your own hallway explaining someone else's wiring to an inspector.

On an electrical panel upgrade the order is fixed. The permit is secured and the work is scheduled with BC Hydro. You are told about the disconnect before it happens. The old panel and meter come out and the new panel and meter base go in. Then the inspector is called to approve the reconnection.

The order on a panel upgrade

  1. 01 Permit secured
  2. 02 Scheduled with BC Hydro
  3. 03 You are told about the disconnect
  4. 04 Old panel and meter out
  5. 05 New panel and meter base in
  6. 06 Inspector approves the reconnection

Permitted work is also the only record that exists. When you sell, that paperwork is the proof.

How to check you are hiring a licensed electrician

Before you hire an electrician in Abbotsford, there are four answers worth asking for.

Ask the company to confirm in writing that it is a licensed electrical contractor in British Columbia. Ask who is pulling the permit, and whether they will be there for the inspection, because the permit has to be filed before work starts. Ask for WorkSafeBC coverage. Then read the reviews on a profile the company does not control. We are a licensed electrical contractor in British Columbia, licensed and insured, WorkSafeBC registered, active and in good standing, with continuous coverage since 30 September 2019.

The rest, in plain terms:

  • We are a licensed electrical contractor in British Columbia, and we are licensed and insured.
  • Jasjot Kohli, the owner, is Red Seal certified and our designated Field Safety Representative. Two of our four electricians hold a Class B Field Safety Representative certification.
  • We are WorkSafeBC registered, active and in good standing, with continuous coverage since 30 September 2019. That is workers' compensation, which is a different thing from insurance.
  • We are BBB Accredited.
  • We are Canadian family owned and have been serving British Columbia since 2019.

What happens if something is wrong after we leave

If something we installed is not right, we come back. You call the same number you called the first time and reach the same company. Our guarantee terms are one year on new construction and six months on renovations. We are open 24 hours, so a problem that turns up in the evening does not have to wait until morning to be reported.

If an inspection does not pass

If an inspection does not pass on our work, we put it right, call the inspector back, and we cover the cost.

If we find something else

Sometimes we find something dangerous that has nothing to do with the job you called us for, and when we do, we tell you and get your approval before doing anything about it.

Four things happen before we drive away:

  • If we find anything unexpected, we talk it through with you and get your approval before any extra work begins.
  • An apprentice's work is checked by a Red Seal electrician or a Field Safety Representative, every time.
  • We test the work before we pack up.
  • We show you it working before we leave.

Wiring in older Abbotsford homes

Roughly 1900 to the late 1940s

Knob and tube wiring was the standard across Canada from roughly 1900 to the late 1940s, and Abbotsford still has homes from that period — heritage places near the old downtown, farmhouses on the flats, post-war bungalows. It carries no ground conductor, and insurers take a hard line on it. If you are buying one, we can do an electrical inspection before you buy, so you know what you are taking on.

The 1960s and 1970s

Homes built in these years often have aluminum wiring, because high copper prices pushed builders to switch. Aluminum is not automatically a hazard, but the connections at outlets, switches and the panel are where it gives trouble.

If you are not sure what wiring your home has, have an electrician open a couple of outlets or switches and look before you plan a renovation around it.

Useful local contacts in Abbotsford

Some of these problems are not ours to fix, so it is quicker to call the right office directly.

City of Abbotsford — building permits

When the electrical work is part of a renovation that also needs a building permit — a suite, a wall coming out, an addition — the building permit is the City's, and it is a separate counter from the electrical permit. The electrical permit is Technical Safety BC's, a different authority and a separate application.

BC Hydro — anything before your meter

The line running to the house and the meter itself are BC Hydro's, not yours and not ours. A dead street, a sagging service line, or getting the power cut so a panel upgrade can go ahead all start with them.

1 800 224 9376. An outage can be reported at any hour; the contact centre for everything else is Monday to Friday, 7am to 8pm, and Saturday, 9am to 5pm.

A power line down on the ground is a 911 call, not a call to an electrician. BC Hydro's own advice is to stay back ten metres and treat it as live even if it is silent.

Calls to make now

Emergency electrician in Abbotsford, and what counts as one

We are open 24 hours. A fault does not wait for business hours. An emergency is anything that could start a fire or shock somebody — a burning smell, scorch marks, sparking, buzzing at the panel, water near the panel, or a breaker that trips again the moment you reset it. A dead outlet or a dead room is a fault, not an emergency, and can safely wait for daylight.

These are the ones that should not wait until morning:

  • A burning or hot-plastic smell coming from an outlet, a switch or the panel.
  • Sparks from an outlet, or a scorch mark around one.
  • A panel that is warm to the touch, or humming or buzzing.
  • Half the house dark while the other half works.
  • A breaker that trips again the moment you reset it.
  • Anything electrical that has been under water.

If you can get to the panel safely, switch that circuit off and call. Do not keep resetting a breaker that keeps going. It's telling you something.

Before you call anyone, three checks are worth five minutes: whether the whole street is dark, whether a breaker has tripped, and whether a GFCI needs resetting. We walk you through all three, and through what can safely wait until morning, over at emergency electrician.

  • One branch carrying normally: those rooms stay on.
  • The other branch tripping: those rooms go dark, and the breaker goes again on the reset.

Electrical services in Abbotsford

We do electrical work for homes, businesses and strata buildings across Abbotsford, from fixing a single dead outlet to rewiring a whole house, and we take emergency calls at any hour.

One call covers every kind of property in Abbotsford. We work in houses and basement suites, in strata buildings, and as a commercial electrician for shops, offices, warehouses and farms. The rate, the free estimate and the way we handle permits are the same for all of them.

  • Panels and service upgrades

Air conditioning use across BC has climbed since the 2021 heat dome, and in Abbotsford a new heat pump or an EV charger is often the load that fills an older panel. We take on electrical panel upgrade work when a home still has a fuse box or has run out of breaker space. We also add sub-panels for garages, shops and suites, and the panels we install are Eaton, Square D and Schneider.

  • House wiring and renovations

Abbotsford has houses from every wiring era, from farmhouses on the flats to 1960s and 1970s subdivisions that can carry aluminum branch wiring. When we rewire a house, we work room by room, so the whole home is never opened up at once. For renovation electrical work, including a basement suite with its own sub-panel, we plan every outlet, switch and light with you before the drywall goes up.

  • EV charger installation

A home EV charger needs its own 240-volt circuit from your panel, so before we quote it we do a load calculation to check the panel can carry it. We install Tesla, Leviton, ChargePoint, Wallbox and Grizzl-E chargers in Abbotsford garages, driveways and strata parkades. We also help you with the BC Hydro EV charger rebate application.

  • Lighting

Inside, we handle light fixture installation, pot lights, dimmers and switches, using Leviton and Lutron products. Outside, we wire landscape lighting outside for gardens and pathways, and on acreages in Matsqui Prairie and Mount Lehman we light long driveways, gates and yards.

  • Faults and repairs

If an outlet has gone dead, a breaker keeps tripping, or the lights keep flickering, our electrical troubleshooting and repair work tracks down the cause and fixes it. It is usually a loose connection, an overloaded circuit or a worn-out breaker, and we tell you which one before we fix it. Water is a cause to rule out too: after the November 2021 Sumas Prairie flood, BC Hydro kept power off to damaged homes until an electrician confirmed the wiring was safe.

  • Small jobs

We come out anywhere in Abbotsford, from Clearbrook to Sumas Mountain, to change one light switch, replace a single outlet or do a single ceiling fan installation. A small repair is booked the same way as a full rewire, and you pay for the time on site.

Areas we serve — a local electrician across Abbotsford

Abbotsford is the largest municipality by land area in the Lower Mainland, so covering the whole city means a lot of ground:

Roughly 72% of Abbotsford's land base sits inside the Agricultural Land Reserve, and the city records the highest farm cash receipts of any municipality in BC. We also work in Chilliwack, Mission and Langley, and we take on electrical work in Vancouver and electrical work in Greater Victoria as well.

The Wire Guys Electrical Ltd. is a licensed electrical contractor based in Abbotsford, British Columbia, handling residential, commercial and strata electrical work across Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley.

What do electricians charge per hour in BC?

There is no single figure, and anyone quoting one before seeing the work is guessing. Our labour is $135 an hour for a Red Seal electrician plus a helper — two people, not one — and plenty of jobs go at a flat rate. The estimate is free. Fault-finding is the exception, at $165 for a 45-minute diagnostic.

What is the minimum charge for an electrician?

For us there isn't one. Most firms set a floor, which is why people assume everybody does. One outlet, one light fitting, one dead switch — we come out for that the same as a full rewire, and you pay for the time on site.

How do I check if an electrician is certified?

Ask the company to confirm in writing that it is a licensed electrical contractor in British Columbia, and ask who is pulling the permit and whether they will be there for the inspection. The permit is filed before work starts, so that answer is easy to hold someone to. Ask for WorkSafeBC coverage as well, and read the reviews on a profile the company does not control. We are a licensed electrical contractor in British Columbia, WorkSafeBC registered, active and in good standing, and we pull the permit and are there when the inspector closes it.

What is a Red Seal electrician?

Red Seal is the interprovincial trade certification. Someone who holds it has passed a standardised exam recognised across Canada rather than in one province only. Jasjot Kohli, the owner here, is Red Seal certified and our designated Field Safety Representative.

Do I need a permit for electrical work?

For most work, yes, and panel work always. In Abbotsford the permit comes from Technical Safety BC rather than the City, and the inspection that closes it is theirs too. We pull it before work starts, so you do no paperwork. A homeowner may do work in their own home in BC, but the permit and inspection still apply.

What is an electrical emergency?

Anything that smells like burning plastic, sparks, gets hot, or leaves part of the house dead. A panel that is warm or buzzing, a scorched outlet, a breaker that trips the second you reset it, or wiring that has been under water. Those are calls to make now, not in the morning. We are open 24 hours, so calling an emergency electrician at 3am gets the same phone answered as at 3pm.

People search 'electrical Abbotsford' and 'electrician Abbotsford'. Is there a difference?

They are the same search, and both land you in the same place. The distinction that actually matters is who holds what. The COMPANY holds the contractor licence; the people who turn up hold their own certifications, and the two are not the same document. We are a licensed electrical contractor in British Columbia, licensed and insured, and two of our four electricians hold a Class B Field Safety Representative certification. Jasjot Kohli, the owner, is Red Seal certified and our designated Field Safety Representative.

Tell us what is going on

Describe the problem and we will tell you what it takes to fix. The estimate is free, and if it turns out to be a hidden fault, the $165 diagnostic ends with you knowing exactly what you are dealing with.
