How much is the BC Hydro EV charger rebate?

The BC Hydro EV charger rebate pays up to 50% of eligible costs, to a maximum of $350, for a Level 2 charger at your home in British Columbia. Eligible costs include the charger itself and the work to install it. You claim the EV charger rebate BC Hydro pays after the charger is in, so keep every invoice from the job.

  • It pays on a new charger at your main home, once per address.
  • The charger must be on BC Hydro's list of eligible models.
  • You have 180 days to apply, counted from the charger invoice or the installation, whichever is earlier.

Is there still an EV charger rebate in BC?

Yes. BC Hydro's home charger rebate is still open, first come, first served, while funding lasts. It runs under the CleanBC Go Electric Home and Workplace Charging Program, which the Province pays for and BC Hydro and FortisBC run. The $350 limit is reached once eligible costs hit $700, so a bigger job still gets $350. The rebate covers the charger, not the car.

What the rebate can cover:

  • The charger counts if its invoice shows the model and the price.
  • Installation labour counts when a licensed electrician does the work.
  • The electrical permit and any design work count too.
  • A power management device counts when it avoids a bigger electrical service.

What it does not cover:

  • A 240V outlet on its own is not covered.
  • Taxes are not an eligible cost.
  • A replacement for a charger you already have does not count.

Eligibility

Who qualifies for the home EV charger rebate?

A new charger at your main home on BC Hydro or FortisBC power qualifies. Replacing an old charger, or a second claim at the same address, does not.

BC Hydro checks these points before it pays:

  • The charger goes in at your principal residence.
  • The home has off-street parking, such as a driveway or a garage.
  • It is a new or additional charger, not a replacement.
  • Only one rebate is paid per address.
  • If you rent, your landlord signs BC Hydro's landlord consent form for your application.

Eligible homes include detached houses, secondary suites, duplexes to fourplexes, side-by-side row homes and mobile homes on a permanent foundation. BC Hydro asks for a licensed electrician, except on a single-family home under an inspected homeowner permit.

The five questions

Which chargers qualify for the Level 2 EV charger rebate?

Check BC Hydro's list of eligible chargers before you buy, since the model on your charger invoice must be on it and meet each of these rules:

  • It is a Level 2 charger on 208 or 240 volts, with a J1772 or NACS (J3400) plug.
  • It carries a Canadian safety mark, such as CSA or cUL.
  • It is new, not used or refurbished.
  • You bought it outright from a supplier in Canada rather than leasing it.
  • It is fixed to the wall, so a portable charging cord does not count.

BC Hydro says Tesla-made chargers are not eligible for the rebate.

If your charger plugs into a 240V outlet that was installed with a permit, and no new electrical work is needed, BC Hydro has a shorter application.

The BC Hydro EV charger rebate application: documents and deadline

You apply online to BC Hydro for the EV charger rebate with four documents: the charger invoice with proof of payment, an installation invoice itemised by the work done, the electrical permit number and a photo of the installed charger. Apply within 180 days of whichever came first: the installation or the charger invoice date. If approved, BC Hydro pays within 90 days.

  1. 01

The charger invoice. It must show the model, the price and proof of payment.

  2. 02

The installation invoice. It needs proof of payment and a cost breakdown, not a single total.

  3. 03

The electrical permit number. The permit is taken out before the work starts.

  4. 04

A photo of the installed charger. Take it once the charger is on the wall.

It is safest to apply as soon as the job passes inspection. If you bought the charger first, its invoice date usually starts the 180 days.

Our invoice is itemised the way BC Hydro asks and shows the permit number, and we help you with the BC Hydro rebate application. BC Hydro decides who is approved and pays the rebate to you, so we cannot promise the rebate itself.

Extra savings: the EV power management device and BC Hydro Peak Saver

A power management device can save you from needing a bigger electrical service, and BC Hydro adds $200 to your rebate when it does. Our load calculation shows which you need.

An EV power management device, also called an EV energy management system (EVEMS), lets a charger share power with the house. That means it can go on a nearly full panel without a bigger service. Our load calculation shows whether you need nothing extra, a device, or upgrading the electrical panel. We install these devices.

When a device avoids a service upgrade, BC Hydro adds $200 to your rebate, if the device and charger went in on or after 1 December 2023. Together they can cover up to 100% of eligible costs, to a maximum of $550, for BC Hydro customers only.

Peak Saver is separate. Enrol an eligible smart charger and BC Hydro gives a one-time $250 bill credit, plus $50 each season it stays enrolled, in return for easing off your charging at peak times.

Our rates for EV charger work

Our hourly rate is published, so you can check any quote we give you against it.

We charge $135 an hour for a Red Seal electrician plus a helper, and it is the same rate day and night. Many jobs are done at a flat rate instead. The estimate is free, and you get the quote in writing before any work starts. Our customers rate us 4.7 stars across 137 Google reviews.

The total depends most on how far your parking spot is from the panel and whether the panel has room for a new circuit. See how we install Level 2 chargers at home.

Do you need a permit to get the rebate?

Where you live decides who issues the electrical permit: Technical Safety BC in Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Mission, while Vancouver issues its own.

Yes. BC Hydro asks for the electrical permit number on the application, and a licensed contractor applies for the permit on your behalf.

We pull the permit before work starts and we are there for the inspection, whether it is a home in Abbotsford, electrical work in Chilliwack, a house in Mission or a garage in Vancouver.

Our process, from load calculation to inspection

Before we start, we check your panel and charger and explain the job. If anything unexpected turns up, we get your approval before any extra work begins.

  1. 01

We calculate the load on your panel and confirm your charger is on BC Hydro's list.

  2. 02

You approve a written quote, and then we pull the electrical permit.

  3. 03

We wire a new circuit to your charger and fit a power management device if the load calculation called for one. An apprentice's work is checked by a Red Seal electrician or a Field Safety Representative, every time.

  4. 04

We test the charger and show you it works before we leave.

  5. 05

We are there for the inspection. If an inspection does not pass on our work, we put it right, call the inspector back, and we cover the cost.

You then get our itemised invoice with the permit number on it, ready for your rebate application.

What happens if something is wrong after we leave

A charger that will not start charging, or a breaker that trips each time it runs, needs a look before you keep using it.

If something we installed is not right, we come back.

Our work carries a one-year guarantee on new construction, six months on renovations.

What our customers say

A customer who asked us about an EV charger, quoted exactly as posted on Google.

  • I wanted to install a EV Charger for my car. I was confused between the 240v plug or the wall charger. I contacted Jas, and he recommended the $50 240v adapter. His knowledge about various wall chargers actually helped me save $650. On another note this is the only company that ever cleaned up after themselves. I highly recommend these guys.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Beyond chargers, we handle the rest of our electrical services across British Columbia.

We answer the phone at any hour. If a charger circuit fails overnight, call our emergency electrician line.

Any questions? Call 778-708-0451

Can I get a free EV home charger?

Usually not. Full cover needs the $200 device top-up as well as the base rebate: together they can cover up to 100% of eligible costs, to a maximum of $550, according to BC Hydro's list of rebate top-ups. The top-up is for BC Hydro customers only, when a power management device avoids a service upgrade.

How long does the rebate take to arrive?

If approved, BC Hydro pays within 90 days of the day you applied, according to BC Hydro's home charger rebate page. The 90 days count from your submission, so apply soon after the job passes inspection. FortisBC customers get a credit on their electricity bill instead.

Does the Tesla Wall Connector qualify for the BC Hydro rebate?

No. BC Hydro says Tesla-made chargers, including the Tesla Wall Connector, have not been eligible since 12 March 2025, according to BC Hydro's product FAQ. Another maker's charger with a NACS (J3400) plug can still qualify if it is on BC Hydro's list. We still install Tesla chargers, just without the rebate.

Can I install the charger myself and still get the rebate?

Yes, on a single-family home. BC Hydro accepts an install under a homeowner electrical permit that passes inspection (programme guide), with the certificate of inspection sent in place of an installation invoice. The usual route is a licensed electrician. Strata and duplex owners cannot take out a homeowner permit.

I live in a condo or townhouse complex. Can I get the rebate?

It depends on the number of units. Buildings with four units or fewer, strata included, use the home rebate. Buildings with five or more units go through BC Hydro's multi-unit programme, which needs pre-approval before work starts (programme guide). We do EV charging for strata buildings, condos and apartments.

I already installed my charger. Can I still apply?

Yes, if you are still within 180 days of whichever came first: the installation or the charger invoice date. The job also needs an electrical permit, since the permit number is a required document (programme guide). Apply soon, because the 180 days are already counting down.

Have this ready when you call:

  • Tell us the charger's make, if you have bought one.
  • Tell us how far your parking spot is from your panel.
  • Send a photo of the label inside your panel door.
  • Check whether BC Hydro or FortisBC sends your electricity bill.
  • Tell us whether you own or rent.
