Straight answer

What is an electrical installation job?

An electrical installation job adds or replaces a fixed part of a home's wiring, such as a light, outlet, fan, breaker or heater, rather than tracing an existing fault. Home electrical installation runs from one GFCI outlet to a room of pot lights. We provide electrical installation services across British Columbia.

The Wire Guys Electrical Ltd. is a licensed electrical contractor serving Abbotsford, Vancouver, Victoria and communities across the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley and Greater Victoria, handling residential and commercial electrical work for homeowners, landlords and business owners in British Columbia.

The list

Common electrical installations in BC homes

These are the installations homeowners ask about most. For switches and breakers, brands we install include Leviton, Lutron, Schneider and Square D.

  • A recessed LED pot light trim going into a freshly cut hole in a drywall ceiling, with spacing marks pencilled nearby 01

    Pot Lights

A pot light installation sits flush with the ceiling. The spacing is worked out before the first hole is cut.

  • A white bathroom exhaust fan grille in the ceiling above a tiled shower 02

    Bathroom Exhaust Fans

A bathroom exhaust fan installation moves shower moisture outside before it damages paint and drywall. It only works if the duct vents outdoors.

  • A combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm mounted on a hallway ceiling near a bedroom door 03

    Smoke & CO Alarms

A smoke alarm warns of fire, and a carbon monoxide alarm warns of a gas you cannot see or smell. Placement is covered under smoke and CO detector installation.

  • A GFCI receptacle with test and reset buttons in a kitchen backsplash beside the sink 04

    GFCI Outlets

A GFCI outlet installation cuts power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to ground, so it belongs near water. We install GFCI and AFCI protection wherever the code requires it.

  • Gloved hands fitting a ceiling fan mounting plate to a round metal ceiling box with the wires drawn through 05

    Ceiling Fans

A ceiling fan installation needs a box rated for the fan's weight and movement. The box behind an old light fixture often is not.

  • A column of circuit breakers behind the cover of a residential electrical panel 06

    Circuit Breakers

We find out why a breaker trips before any circuit breaker replacement. That check is $165 for a 45-minute diagnostic.

  • An electric baseboard heater under a window with a digital wall thermostat beside it 07

    Baseboard Heaters

Most baseboard heater installation jobs need a 240-volt circuit sized to the heater. A thermostat on the wall controls it.

Hiring an electrician for small jobs

A single job or a short list is booked and signed off like a larger job.

One outlet or a full rewire

A deck outlet, a new switch and a ceiling fan are all new installations we book on their own. Anyone looking for electrical installation near me in the Fraser Valley, Vancouver or Victoria can book one with us.

Who checks a small job

  • Jasjot Kohli, the owner, is Red Seal certified and our designated Field Safety Representative.
  • Two of our four electricians hold a Class B Field Safety Representative certification.
  • An apprentice's work is checked by a Red Seal electrician or a Field Safety Representative, every time.
  • We test it and show you it works before we leave.

Before you say yes

Electrical installation cost, permits and what happens after we leave

Installation work with The Wire Guys costs $135 an hour for a Red Seal electrician plus a helper, the same rate at 3am as at 3pm, and many jobs have a flat rate. Work we can see gets a free electrical estimate. Tracing a fault is $165 for a 45-minute diagnostic, which tells you what the problem is and how we are going to fix it.

  1. 01

    How we price the job

    Electrician installation cost depends on:

    • Whether a circuit with room is nearby, or a new one runs from the panel
    • How far the wire travels, and how easy it is to reach
    • The fittings you choose, such as dimmer switches and light fixtures
    • Whether a permit and an inspection are needed
  2. 02

Who pulls the electrical installation permit

We pull the permit before work starts. Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission and Langley permits come from Technical Safety BC; Vancouver, Victoria, Surrey and Burnaby run their own offices. See the permit steps on a panel upgrade.

  3. 03

    After the inspector's visit

We are there for the inspection on jobs such as a new hot tub circuit. If an inspection does not pass on our work, we put it right, call the inspector back, and we cover the cost.

  4. 04

    After the job is finished

If something we installed is not right, we come back. Anything that cannot wait goes to our 24-hour emergency electrician.

Questions about what installation work costs

How much does an electrician charge to add an outlet?

There is no set price for adding an outlet. It depends on whether a circuit with room is nearby, how far the wire runs, and whether GFCI protection is needed. Whether a job needs a permit depends on the work, and adding a new outlet or circuit does.

Do electricians charge by the hour or by the job?

Both, depending on the job. We charge $135 an hour for a Red Seal electrician plus a helper, the same rate at 3am as at 3pm. Many predictable jobs get a flat rate, so the number is agreed before work begins.

What is the smallest job an electrician will take on?

One outlet on its own is enough for us to book the job. A single-item job is priced the same way as a larger one: the time it takes at our hourly rate, or a flat rate where the job suits one.

Do electricians charge for a quote?

Some electricians do. For installation work we can see, the estimate is free and the electrical installation quote comes in writing before we start, so you see the price first. Tracing a fault is different: that is $165 for a 45-minute diagnostic.

Can an electrician charge more than the quote?

It can happen when the scope changes after the quote: more labour, something found behind a wall, or costlier fittings. A quote is priced on what we can see — if the scope changes we tell you before we do it, not after.
