Do I actually need an electrical panel upgrade, or can the panel I have be fixed?

Sometimes it is not needed at all. A panel is genuinely due when the label carries a known hazard brand, when the house has outgrown the capacity, or when the panel shows heat, noise or damage. A single tripping breaker is usually a smaller, cheaper fix. So is a fuse box needing nothing more than a conversion to breakers. Different jobs. Different prices.

Do you need an electrical panel replacement?

Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes the answer is no.

A single tripping breaker, a loose neutral, or a dimmer switch wrong for the circuit can all look like a panel problem. All three are something else. Before we recommend an electrical panel replacement, we calculate the load on the panel and rule out the smaller, cheaper fix first. We run the same load calculation for an EV charger, a hot tub, or a generator, not only when a full replacement is on the table.

If the panel genuinely needs to go, we show you what we found and explain why it needs replacing, on site, in person. If we spot something unrelated while the panel is open, we tell you. Your approval comes first.

Signs your electrical panel needs replacing

Here are the real triggers, in the words homeowners actually use:

  • Breakers keep tripping on more than one circuit
  • An electrical panel warm to touch
  • An electrical panel making noise, a buzzing or humming that was not there before
  • A home inspection or insurer has flagged the panel by name

Age raises the odds. A panel from before 2000 is more likely to be genuinely due, especially one still rated at 60 or 100 amps in an older Fraser Valley or Lower Mainland home. Houses of that age often still run knob and tube wiring alongside the original panel.

Fuse box vs circuit breakers

Code changes over time. Running on fuses, the honest fix is usually a fuse box upgrade to breakers rather than a full panel replacement, and "out of code" on its own is not a reason to replace a panel still doing the job.

The label inside the door

Which electrical panel brands should I avoid?

People often ask us which are the best electrical panel brands, and which to avoid, and four names come up again and again: Federal Pacific (sold as FPE), Zinsco, Challenger and Federal Pioneer. If your panel carries one of those labels, the label alone is a real reason to replace the panel.

Age alone is another matter. Plenty of older panels are outdated and still perfectly safe. A hazard brand is different. The risk is the brand, not the year of install.

Federal Pacific and Zinsco carry safety concerns beyond a code update. Check your own panel first. The brand is printed on the label inside the door.

When we do install a new panel, we install Eaton, Square D or Schneider.

The five questions

What does an electrical panel upgrade cost, and what changes the price?

No two panels are alike. The amperage jump, the wiring behind the wall and what BC Hydro needs all change the price.

Our daytime rate is $135 an hour for a Red Seal electrician plus a helper. Two people, one rate. Many jobs run on a flat rate instead, once we have seen the work, and either way you get the quote in writing before any work starts, priced on what we can see. If the scope changes once we are inside the panel, we tell you before we do the extra work, not after.

Whoever quotes you should be a licensed electrical contractor in British Columbia. We are, and we pull the permit for the work ourselves.

A free estimate covers pricing the job you can see. Tracing a fault is different. That work is $165 for a 45-minute diagnostic, which buys you two things: what the problem actually is, and how we are going to fix the problem.

What changes the price:

  • the size of the amperage jump, so the cost to upgrade electrical panel to 200 amps is different from a smaller service, and a 200 amp panel upgrade cost is quoted on what we find
  • whether BC Hydro's side of the meter needs work too
  • the mast and meter base
  • how easy the panel is to access
  • the permit

For a number on your own panel, we come and look first.

The permit, BC Hydro and the inspector

An electrical panel upgrade permit is required in BC, through Technical Safety BC or the municipality, depending on where you are. We pull the permit. You do no paperwork. Some electricians tell customers a panel swap does not need one. In BC, it does.

BC Hydro panel upgrade sequence

BC Hydro signs off first. The meter cannot come off before then, so the sequence runs in order:

  1. 01

We secure the permit and schedule the work with BC Hydro

  2. 02

You are told about the disconnect before it happens

  3. 03

The old panel and meter come out, the new panel and meter base go in

  4. 04

The inspector is called to approve the reconnection

We attend every inspection. You are never left alone with the inspector, and a panel job also touches grounding and bonding, which is one of the things an inspector checks before signing off.

If it does not pass inspection

Three things happen on every panel job before we call the job done:

  • If we find anything unexpected, we talk it through with you and get your approval before any extra work begins.
  • An apprentice's work is checked by a Red Seal electrician or a Field Safety Representative, every time.
  • We test it and show you it works before we leave.

If an inspection does not pass on work we did, we put it right, call the inspector back out, and we cover the cost. Not you.

The promise covers what we installed, right after the job, at the inspection stage. Nothing wider. The promise is not a general warranty and not a promise about anyone else's wiring, but if we get something wrong the first time, putting the work right is simply what we do.

If something is not right after we leave

If something we installed is not right, we come back. No inspector needed. If you notice a problem later, call us.

We give a one-year guarantee on new construction, six months on renovations.

100 amp vs 200 amp panel: which do you actually need?

100 amp service compared with 200 amp service
Comparison 100 amp service 200 amp service
Handles well Lighting, plumbing, a stove, a dryer All of that, plus a heat pump, an EV charger, a hot tub, an induction range
Breaker slots Fewer, and often already full Room to add circuits later
Usual trigger House built before big electric loads showed up Adding one major new load, or a suite
  • Nothing on the top bar has gone away. Everything on the bottom bar was added on top of it.
  • The amber running past the end is the arithmetic. It is not an opinion about your panel.

Most homes built before big electric loads arrived still run fine on 100 amp. A 200 amp service upgrade usually starts with one new load, a heat pump, a hot tub, an EV charger installation, rather than with a problem in the existing panel. Sometimes slots run out first. Some 100 amp panels run out of breaker slots long before running out of amperage, and a full board with no spare slots is its own reason to move up, whatever the amperage says. The 100 amp to 200 amp upgrade cost is set by the same factors as any panel job, not by the amperage alone.

Adding a whole house surge protector at the panel

A whole house surge protector is a small device mounted at the electrical panel on its own breaker. When the voltage coming into the house spikes, it sends the excess to ground before the spike can travel down your circuits to the furnace, the fridge or the TV.

Spikes come from outside, when the utility switches lines or a storm brings a line down, and from inside, when large motors such as a heat pump start and stop. The device limits that damage. It cannot stop a direct lightning strike, and we will not tell you it can.

Whole house surge protector installation is simplest while the panel is already open for an upgrade, and it also fits most existing breaker panels that have room for its breaker. A plug-in surge strip still earns its place behind a computer or TV, because the panel unit takes the big spikes and the strip handles what gets through.

Panel upgrade questions

Any questions? Call 778-708-0451

How much does it cost to upgrade an electrical panel?

No single figure is honest. The electrical panel replacement cost is set by what we find once the panel is open: how big the amperage jump is, what condition the mast and meter base are in, and whether BC Hydro's side of the meter needs work too. So we come and look at the panel before pricing the work, rather than reading a number down the phone.

Do I need a permit to upgrade an electrical panel?

Yes. A panel upgrade is permitted work in BC, filed with Technical Safety BC or with your municipality depending on where you live. The job is not finished until an inspector has signed the work off, and that inspection is the part protecting you, an independent check that the panel feeding your house went in correctly.

Can I upgrade my electrical panel without rewiring my house?

In most homes, yes. A panel upgrade replaces the panel and the meter base, not the wiring already running through your walls. The exception is wiring which is itself part of the problem, like old aluminum wiring or knob and tube, and in those cases you hear from us before the work is booked, not once the job is under way.

How do I know if I really need a new electrical panel?

Not every symptom means replacement. Sometimes the fault is one bad breaker, or a loose connection behind the breaker. The signs worth a second opinion are breakers tripping repeatedly across different circuits, a panel warm to the touch, and buzzing when nothing heavy is running. A brand on the hazard list counts on its own, whatever the panel is doing.

Do electricians charge for a quote?

Not for work we can see: the estimate for a panel upgrade is free. Tracing a fault is the one exception, at $165 for a 45-minute diagnostic, because finding a hidden problem is different work from pricing one already in front of us.

Will an electrician leave holes in my walls?

Usually not. Sometimes a cable needs a new route and there is no other way to reach the run. A straight panel swap rarely needs an opening. Where an opening is unavoidable, we show you where the opening goes and get your approval before anything is cut, because nobody should meet a hole in the drywall by surprise.
